Evony LLC Sues Malicious Blogger

As reported on evony.net, Evony LLC issued a lawsuit against a “malicious” blogger for multiple violations of international libel standards.

Video Game Developer Seeks Damages from Blogger for “Gross Disregard for the Truth”

NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, September 14, 2009 – The developer for the popular online video game Evony has filed suit against blogger Bruce Everiss for posting defamatory and false statements online about the company and the game. The lawsuit follows multiple rebuffed attempts to reconcile the matter out of court.

Evony’s Australia based legal counsel has proceeded on multiple fronts internationally against the libelous assaults that Bruce Everiss has leveled against Evony, LLC (http://www.evony.net), its game “Evony: Age I”, and its corporate leadership on his weblog and in publications worldwide in recent weeks.
Evony’s attorneys said Bruce Everiss’ attacks have caused significant damage to the company’s brand and the gaming experience for Evony’s users and millions of fans around the world.

“For weeks, we have worked to avoid taking our case into the legal courts, hoping instead to persuade Mr. Everiss to see the error of his ways and correct the multiple fraudulent and false claims he has made against Evony,” said Dean Groundwater, Evony’s chief legal counsel and a principle with the Australian firm Warren McKeon Dickson. “In the more than 15 years I have been practicing law, I have never seen such a gross disregard for the truth as that displayed by Mr. Everiss. His actions bring an enormous discredit to all online journalists internationally and have substantially impacted Evony’s reputation in Australia.  I am confident the Supreme Court of New South Wales will see through the falsehoods being perpetrated by Mr. Everiss and will hold him accountable for his blatantly illegal and libelous actions.”

“Mr. Everiss’ attempts to spread his patently false charges to others in the online community cannot be allowed to go unanswered,” said Benjamin Gifford, Vice Development Director for the Legal IP Strategic Division for Delaware based Evony, LLC.
“In the digital age in which we now live, online journalists and bloggers – and the traditional media outlets that may rely upon them as sources – must strive for a higher standard of integrity and accuracy. Mr. Everiss’ complete disregard for even the most basic tenets of journalistic responsibility have left our company no alternative but to take these legal actions. We hope now, in facing the full light of day before the Supreme Court, that Mr. Everiss will finally come clean and clear the record,” said Gifford.

Google Sites Pageview Limit Resolved

The head of Google Sites contacted us today to apologize for The Evony Wiki (Evonypedia) downtime.

He said "We have been really impressed with what you have built using the product. I apologize for the quota issue you saw today. We are constantly adapting the algorithm and sometimes we don't get it quite right. You shouldn't see this problem in the future."

Pageview Limit Exceeded Again on Google Sites

The Evony Wiki (Evonypedia) is down again today.

It has been only 6 days since the last time Google Sites shut down Evonypedia. According to Google Analytics, the website gained only 275,000 unique pageviews since it was first shut down on Aug 1 2009.

This is ridiculous.

Evonypedia gets 10,000 unique visitors a day and has a $1.05 eCPM, more than triple the industry average (i.e. visitors click a lot of Google ads on the site).

Evonypedia also has a Google Adwords campaign and pays Google to advertise on other websites.

Google still shut down Evonypedia due to some vague “Pageview limit exceeded” today.

Hopefully Google Sites will correct this very soon. If Google does not, they will lose the Evony Wiki and all other websites that THEGAMENET is producing, such as the Aion Wiki and the Star Wars Wiki (Starwarspedia).

Saudi Arabia Unblocked Evony

The government of Saudi Arabia unblocked Evony on Thu Jul 23 2009!

Four days ago, the King Abdel Aziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) blocked www.evony.com, preventing everybody in Saudi Arabia from playing Evony.

Today we were notified by a citizen of Saudi Arabia that Evony has been unblocked since Thursday.

This is great news, and we at EvonyNet hope our websites, like the Evony Wiki (Evonypedia), never get censored by foreign governments.

Saudi Arabia Blocked Evony

It is not every day that Saudi Arabia contacts you!

Two days ago, we received an email from Saudi Arabia notifying us that, as of  Sun Jul 19 2009, everybody in Saudi Arabia is being blocked from playing Evony.

The government of Saudi Arabia may have taken offense to the Evony Internet advertisements using beautiful women with some skin showing.

The King Abdel Aziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) is responsible for the Internet protocols in Saudi Arabia. Currently, there are around 750,000 sites blocked and filtered on the pretext of protecting Islamic values and culture. Unfortunately, if the user does try to circumnavigate the block, they will be having their use tracked and monitored.

China also has the power to block all of its citizens from any website they deem inappropriate, but as of this writing, has not blocked Evony.

Evony Will Not Tolerate Spamming

Dear Players,

We have been excited at the success of iEvony, but we have also come across an unintended side effect of the iEvony system. Some players have abusively and unethically engaged in spamming practices on a variety of websites with the intent of boosting their credits. This practice affects site traffic and makes headaches and extra work for moderators on a variety of websites. It reflects poorly not only on these users, but also on Evony as a whole.

For this reason, we will absolutely not tolerate such spamming practices. Players who engage in spam practices (posting multiple threads from multiple accounts on the same site, attempting to get forum users to follow a link) will be aggressively pursued and sanctioned. Penalties may include: being stripped of ALL earned Credits and any Coins or items they were exchanged for; having your iEvony account permanently disabled; being temporarily or permanently banned from Evony.

We encourage owners and moderators of sites that receive such spam to contact us to report it. Please provide proof of the spam (screenshots or search links) and we will take appropriate action to see that your site is not disturbed by our players.

Our goal with the iEvony program is for our players to be rewarded for being our goodwill ambassadors on the sites which they normally frequent and for the most part that is exactly what is happening. We do not agree with the negative actions taken by a few and intend to see to it that this does not happen going forward.

500,000 Evony Players

Dear Evony Players,

When Evony was released, the demand for the game far exceeded our expectations. Our servers and network were designed with a moderate size player base in mind, and the number of Evony players now exceeds 500,000. While we were thrilled with the response to the game, we were also overwhelmed.

We were basically left with two options: scale up our infrastructure to meet demand, or forgo the "Free Forever" theme and convert to a subscription system, which would reduce the number of users.

We decided that because "Free Forever" is what inspired players to come to Evony in the first place, we would stick with it and do our best to support all our paid and unpaid players, rather than changing the business model to subscription-based.  Since that time, our team has been getting very little sleep, often working 20 hours per day on Evony to make the game better, more stable and error-free. We believe that while the game is far from perfect,our efforts have yielded results. Evony servers are more stable than ever before. In addition, we have ramped up our capacity, including adding a new server, and we will continue to increase our capacity to keep up with demand.

We're also working on bug fixes, based on feedback from all of you. Many bugs have been fixed, but we realize more still exist. We are doing our best to stay on top of them.

A major point of controversy came when we attempted to fix the "Scout spam" medal exploit issue. Our goal was to fix the exploit, but in doing so we had the unintended side effect of dramatically lowering the medal drop rate.

We initially tried to fix this by artificially increasing the drop rate, but we eventually decided to redesign the medal system entirely. Now medals drop based on the level of the barbarian city or valley attacked. Higher level valleys drop higher level medals, and the drop rate is much more predictable and even.

Our intention was never to force players to buy Evony Cents to get medals through purchased medal boxes. We are committed to a real Free Forever approach. We want players to be able to gain promotion and have success in the game without ever paying any money. Evony Cent items are designed to help players do things faster and easier, and are supposed to be completely optional.

However, much of the time these goals were not communicated, both because we are on a different continent and because we are so busy with efforts to correct issues and increase capacity. That was a mistake on our part and certainly conveyed the wrong message to you, the player. For this reason, we have now hired an English Liaison to help aid in communication with the community and are in the process of hiring additional liaisons, moderators and customer service representatives to help address player concerns and keep the lines of communication open.

After all of this, we want to let the players know that we are still enthusiastically committed to continuing to improve Evony. The new medal system will reward players according to the difficulty of their battles. Tougher battles are more likely to yield better medals.  As Evony moves forward, we are working on some exciting developments. We're going to continue to fix bugs and exploits as they crop up. We're going to listen to the voice of our community through our liaisons and customer service team. We're in the process of building and strengthening our customer service team. We'll balance combat and the game economy by hiring game data specialists and economists. We're building better graphics, animations and in-game videos and adding music and sound into Evony. We're continuing to increase server capacity and performance, increasing server stability and reliability. We're adding new moderators in-game and on the forums.

And we are still developing Age Two, which will add a historical perspective and new combat mechanics to the game, among many other things.  Players have responded in huge numbers to our employment postings.

We're excited to have so many of the people working on Evony also be players of Evony. In this way, we can continue to mold the game to be what players want.

Thanks to the efforts of developers working around the clock for the past month we are proud to announce the official release of Evony! The entire team at Evony owes a big thanks to everyone who participated in the beta phase. Although Evony (formerly Civony) has undergone a name change, we want to assure all of you that the gameplay experience remains the same. Its a different logo, but the game is the same and all of your character data has been preserved from beta to live, so you can pick up where you left off! We want to make this transition as smooth as possible, so you may continue to access the servers through the old Civony URL for now, as it will automatically redirect you to the new Evony address.

Web Ad Design

We want to draw more users to Evony with ads. We need excellent ads to generate more impressions and higher CTRs and conversion rates. Candidates should be experienced, creative and enthusiastic.

Advertising Networks

We want to advertise through as many channels as possible, including rich media advertising networks. We are looking for people with connections to such networks to get our ads as much visibility as possible.

Player Promotion

We would like to not only promote Evony ourselves through advertisements, but find creative ways of encouraging our players to promote it as well, to their friends. We are looking for a qualified candidate with a solid understanding of both the game and internet social networking to generate and manage player promotion programs.

Technical Team

Email Architecture

We presently send users a welcome email and password recovery feature via email, but we would like to expand this by giving users the option of receiving emails for certain in-game events such as being attacked. We also need to correct problems in the current system which prevent some users from receiving email. A specialist in this field should have ideas and solutions for these types of issues.

Payment Processing

We want to expand payment options to include receiving payments through mobile SMS, phone billing, credit cards and other methods to meet customer demand, and we need a specialist with experience in this field.

IDC and CDN Experts

We are continuing to add new servers and upgrade bandwidth to improve the player's experience and need experts in the field to recommend and coordinate these centers and networks.

Community Team

Community Liaison

We need customer-oriented individuals with strong communication skills to act as representatives to the Evony community. With strong community bases in the US, Europe and Australia, we would like community managers to represent our interests in each of these areas. We presently need liaisons for Europe and Australia.
Duties include: interacting with the community on behalf the developers, carrying concerns from the community to developers and helping to address player questions and concerns.

Forum Moderator

We need customer-oriented individuals with strong communication skills to moderate the community forums. Moderators should be conscientious and professional with an understanding of game forums. A mod's job is to steer discussion away from harmful/destructive topics while fostering useful, helpful and informative topics.

In-game Moderator

We need customer-oriented individuals with good attention to detail to foster a healthy and productive in-game environment. Specialists would moderate in-game chat as necessary, as well as generate plans and methods to best encourage a positive environment for Evony players.

Wiki & Answers Administrator

We need to an expert to set up and administer a Wiki/Answers system. The goal of this individual would be to encourage its use and make it as helpful as possible to users.

English-Language Specialists

We need individuals with very strong English language skills and an in-depth understanding of the game to help correct language flaws and increase the usefulness of tooltips and language within the game and website. Candidates should exhibit strong written communication skills and a careful eye for detail.

Customer Service Supervisor

We need an experienced, professional, customer-oriented individual with strong communication skills to oversee and assist the customer service team, ensure quality customer service and address customer service issues as they arise.

Welcome! Evony is a massively-multiplayer real time strategy game.

Everything that happens in Evony takes place in a real-time persistent
world. Construction, research, troop training, attack, and defense
strategy are completely under your control. When you log off, your
cities and troops are still there, attacking, defending and building
up resources. You begin the game as a minor lord of one small village,
but with work, strategy, teamwork -- and maybe a little luck -- you
can grow your village to the capital of a mighty empire!

As a new player to this game, you are in a 7-day Beginner's
Protection. This is a peaceful time for you to develop your city
without fear of attack, but be aware that the protection will expire
if your Town Hall reaches level 5 or 7-day period expires - whichever
comes first.

If you want a boost to help you get started, we are offering a special
package just for beginners. If you spend 30.00USD or more during the 7
days after your first login, you'll receive a FREE Beginner's Package
valued at 50.00USD. This package contains everything you need to get a
jump start in building your kingdom before you become vulnerable to
attack.

Since this is your first day in Evony. We recommend that you follow
the Quests. The quest system will guide you through the beginning
stages of the game and teach you basic kingdom-building and town
administration.

As you embark on this adventure, be ready to start interacting with
other players. Alliances are already formed and looking for members
like you, or you can choose to start your own alliance, or even go it
alone. Be aware that the game continues and resources will keep
building in real time, even if you're not online. By the time you
leave Beginner's Protection, your cities should have solid defenses!

Other players aren't your only concern. Barbarians overrun the land
and control many of the valleys as well as their own walled cities. If
you wish to take control of these areas, you'll have to dislodge the
barbarians!

Evony is a constantly changing, dynamic, persistent world. You may
gain Honor, Prestige, Rank and Title, all at your own pace and style.
You are limited only by your ambition!
